A Day in the LIfe - OCA Priest-Chaplain Shares His Ministry in Afghanistan - 04/06/09

Hundreds of U.S. and Coalition military and civilians lined the main streets of Bagram Air Field for the Fallen Comrade Ceremony and saluted as the vehicle with the remains of the fallen Romanian warrior slowly passed by en route to the Enduring Faith Chapel on April 6, 2009.
The casket of the fallen warrior is borne into the Enduring Faith Chapel where Fr. Bogdan Oancea (Chaplain [Captain] in the Romanian Army) [r.] and Archpriest Alexander F.C. Webster (Chaplain [Colonel], U.S. Army) [l.] concelebrated the Orthodox Wake Service.
Inside the chapel, Fr. Bogdan censes the Romanian flag-draped casket, while Fr. Alexander chants a funeral hymn. The service was conducted in both the English and Romanian languages by both priests.
The Fallen Comrade Ceremony continues as the vehicle with the remains of the fallen Romanian warrior proceeds to the flight line.
The procession on the tarmac moves forward to the waiting aircraft for the Ramp Ceremony: a Romanian soldier with a photo of the fallen warrior, the military clergy (l. to r.: CH (MAJ) Karen Meeker, the Deputy Command Chaplain for Combined Joint Task Force (CJTF)-101 representing the U.S. Command Chaplain, and the three officiating Orthodox priest-chaplains -- Archpriest Ion Dacian Illinca (Chaplain [Colonel]) from Bucharest, Romania; Fr. Bogdan Ciprian Oancea with the Romanian battalion in Afghanistan; and Fr. Alexander F.C. Webster, U.S. Army chaplain visiting Afghanistan for the Lenten and Paschal seasons), the casket, and the CJTF-101 Commanding General and Command Sergeant Major.
The Ramp Ceremony conducted by the Orthodox priest-chaplains in both Romanian and English blesses the remains of the fallen Romanian warrior for the flight home and burial in his native land.
The CJTF-101 Commanding General and Command Sergeant Major pay their last respects to the fallen Romanian warrior and place their personal command coins on the flag-draped casket as a special honor.
The officiating Othodox clergy and the CJTF-101 Deputy Command Chaplain render the final salute to the fallen Romanian warrior in the Ramp Ceremony.
